At the end of the XNUMXth century, Richard Coeur de Lion ordered the foundation of the Priory of Grammont in Saint-Prouant. The monastery depends on the community of Grandmont monks, who apply the strict rule initiated by Etienne de Muret. The Priory, integrated into the Abbeys of the South Vendée, remains one of the best preserved Grandmont foundations in France.

The remarkably well-preserved walls of this monastic complex still testify today to the desire for austerity and sought-after tranquility.

Visit

The Priory of Grammont today offers fine testimony to a certain “austerity” of Grandmont architecture. Indeed, the conventual buildings form, with the chapel, a perfect quadrilateral around the cloister.

The guest room, the kitchen, the refectory and its rib vaults as well as the chapter house offer interesting architectural elements. The old cloister, unfortunately destroyed during the Wars of Religion, consisted of four covered galleries and provided access to the Chapel.

Evening parties – concerts

On Monday summer evenings, at dusk, voices rise in the Priory of Grammont. These nocturnal musical evenings take place at 21 p.m. (gospel, a capella singing, men's choir, secular songs, sacred songs).

An animated site

  1. The chapel, with renowned acoustics, regularly hosts concerts.
  2. A virtual visit of this building is possible! You will find an exceptional presentation of the pieces of the Treasure of Grandmont, by a unique photographic process and a 3D film.
  3. Then, extend the visit outside. The photographic exhibition of Yann Arthus-Bertrand “the abbeys seen from the sky” dresses the walls of the Priory.

If you want to be perfect, go, sell everything you have: give it to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me!”
