The climb to the bell tower for a one-on-one with the Archangel
A few kilometers from the famous park of Puy du Fou®, the bell tower of Saint-Michel-Mont-Mercure is an unmissable place in the Vendée bocage. This building impresses visitors and makes the inhabitants proud. Everything is explained since the highest point of the Vendée is here, at 290 meters above sea level !
Before starting your journey to reach the top of the bell tower, take the time to discover inside the church the life of the statue of the bell tower as seen by the Michelais, inhabitants of the town. A replica of the archangel was even sculpted by a local artist in 2013.
And let's go for the climb with 199 steps! A stop halfway on the first balcony is possible to start taking some pictures. But the view will only be better if you continue to the top floor. Enjoy now this head to head with theArchangel Michael 42 meters high, to admire the typical landscape of the region and who knows, maybe see the ocean.
The golden statue that crowns it is the pride of the inhabitants of the town. It represents the Archangel Saint-Michel slaying the dragon, and is an exact replica of the statue made for the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica in Lyon at the end of the 1889th century. The workshops where this technical feat came from wanted to show their know-how at the XNUMX Universal Exhibition in Paris, and sent a copy. The parish priest of Saint-Michel-Mont-Mercure did not miss such an opportunity and bought the replica for his church!
