Erected on a rocky promontory, the town developed in fortified terraces at the foot of its castle. From this period, it retains winding streets and emblematic monuments: the castle, the Saint-Jacques church in the city center, and the chaplaincy located at the bottom of the city. Driving center of a rural area, Pouzauges experienced new hours of glory at the turn of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. The first electrified city in the west of France, its lively cattle markets made it famous. The plots typical of the bocage landscape and the hamlets which constitute the immediate environment of Pouzauges testify to this close relationship between the town and the countryside. In the heart of the city, there are now narrow, flower-lined streets, typical facades in stone, brick and tile, rejuvenating green spaces and works of contemporary art. Thus, Pouzauges offers a setting conducive to relaxation, the discovery of heritage and culture and privileged contact with nature.
Outside the village, it is also possible to discover the Notre-Dame du Vieux-Pouzauges church and its 12th century wall paintings, and the twin windmills of Terrier-Marteau, which have preserved their operating mechanism and still produce flour today.
