JARDIN DU PRIEURE SAINT PIERRE

The park redesigned in 1750, a haven of greenery, exudes an atmosphere of contemplation and meditation.
This garden would have been redesigned around 1750 by the canons of Saint Augustine. Since then it has kept its structures: successive terraces, alignments of yews or Taxus Baccata, cut into topiaries (some subjects must be over 300 years old).
In the center of the terraces, an orchard of apple and pear trees of local and ancient species has been reconstituted in the old affiage, a term from old Vendée dialect meaning “place of grafting” or “orchard”.
To the south, an opening towards meadows, ponds and the countryside. To the east, a wood descends towards the river (the Grand Lay). It is an invitation to a bucolic walk.

A walking path, open to the general public (except bicycles and all motorized vehicles) all year round, passes between the affiage and the meadow then descends via wooden steps to the washhouse to follow the riparian forest of the Grand Lay and emerge near the Chapel.

Garden open during the “Rendez-vous aux jardins” in June, during the “Heritage Days” in September and all year round by appointment.
