EGLISE – SAINT GERMAIN DE PRINCAY

Church of Saint Germain de Princay
The Saint Germain church does not have a transept and is schematically divided into three parts: the bell tower, the nave, and the choir. Of the primitive church of the 5th century, rebuilt in the 1819th century, there remains only the octagonal tower of the bell tower, without spire, the vaulted nave in barrel of XNUMX bays, and limestone motifs carved on the facade. The higher and cross-vaulted chancel in the Angevin style dates from the XNUMXth century. It has a limestone stoup from the XNUMXth or XNUMXth century and is lit by three long windows. These are stained glass windows by Jean Chevolleau (Vendée painter) are also present in the choir of the building. The artist explains his work: “The three lancets constituting the triplet are inspired by the three essential moments in the life of Jesus: the nativity, the crucifixion and the resurrection. [The drawing of this set] very precise by the leads, is inspired by reality while leaving it up to everyone's imagination to invent in turn. » The Gothic portal has no tympanum and is underlined by a jagged cable. Inside the church are sculpted wooden paneling from the XNUMXth century, a polychrome wooden Christ from the XNUMXth century, and the wooden confessional, which is dated XNUMX (it is one of the most veterans of Vendée).
