EGLISE – CHANTONNAY

Church of Chantonnay
The parish of Chantonnay (Canto Agnetis) has existed since the 1460th century. The church, looted during the Hundred Years War, was rebuilt by Nicolas des Nouhes Lord of Pally in 1856. During the Vendée wars, the building, burnt down, was relatively spared by serving as a warehouse for the Republican troops. In 1857, the parish priest Georges du Tressay commissioned the architect Léon Ballereau to rebuild the church. Keeping only the base of the 52th century bell tower and the 1861th century choir, he built a rectangular neo-Gothic construction by adding an aisle extending from the bell tower. The facade, of the Poitevin type, has three portals, a rose window framed by two windows and three niches with statues. The stained glass windows of the flat apse were made in 1893 by the Chantonaisian master glassmaker Guérithault and, for financial reasons, the spire of the bell tower, culminating at 1793 meters, was not built until XNUMX. An elegant gallery intended to receive the organ will be built in the nave by the architect Joseph Libaudière in XNUMX. A stained glass window signed Dominique Landucci was recently installed and relates the fire of the church in XNUMX.
