ABBAYE SAINTE MARIE DU GUÉ DE TRIZAY

The first Cistercian abbey in Vendée! Under restoration
The historian Léon CHAIGNE dates the foundation of the abbey in the year 1137 and its consecration on August 15, 1145. Daughter of Pontigny, the abbey of Sainte Marie du Gué de Trizay was the first Cistercian abbey in Vendée. The first known bishop is Jean de Trizay who will then participate in the foundation of the abbey of Notre Dame de Ré on the Ile de Ré between 1165 and 1170.
Protection
The remains of the old abbey including the old abbey church, the remains of the east wing of the convent building, the 18th century building to the south, the floor of the old cloister, are registered by decree of April 10, 1989.
