ABBAYE DE LA GRAINETIERE

Founded in 1130 by Benedictine monks, the fortified abbey was attacked during the Hundred Years' War (1372) and burned 3 times during the Wars of Religion (late 16th century). During the Revolution, the convent buildings were sold as national property. La Grainetière Abbey was classified as a Historic Monument in 1946. Since 1979, a priory has been installed there by the Congregation of Notre-Dame d'Espérance, with the presence of around ten monks. From 1963 to 2018, all of the remains of the abbey were consolidated. Also, the Real Estate Association of La Grainetière, owner and which is responsible for its restoration with the help of the Association of Friends of La Grainetière and the Monastic Community, launched the GREAT PROJECT 2030 to restore the volumes destroyed over the centuries …to properly celebrate the 900 years of the abbey!
