Your itinerary
Step 1
The basilica, in Romano-Byzantine style, was built in 2 stages: from 1888 to 1892, then from 1938 to 1949.
Inside, the ciborium houses the tombs of Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, Blessed Marie-Louise Trichet (1st Daughter of Wisdom) and the Marquis de Magnanne (great protector of the Montfortian family). The stained glass windows illustrate moments in the life of Montfort: an interactive touch table allows you a more detailed discovery.
Step 2
The neo-Gothic chapel, whose bell tower culminates at 81 meters in height, is one of the most important XNUMXth century buildings in the region. Inside, you will admire the remarkable windows made by the Parisian master glassmaker Claudius Lavergne. An interactive touch table allows you to appreciate the details. Also discover the “places of memory” as well as the museum of the missions (free), made up of memories of the mission of Wisdom and the relics of Father de Montfort.
Step 3
The “long house”, a narrow house 42 meters long, housed the first Montfortians, housed upstairs in a dozen cells. It has a small museum on the ground floor. The "house of the Holy Spirit" of the Montfort Missionaries was built in 1788. From March to October 1793, the building housed the largest military hospital in the Vendée.
Step 4
The Calvary rises on three circular terraces, connected by a staircase. The cross precedes in the alignment of the staircase the chapel of the Passion, built in 1873 by the architect Fraboulet. This building offers you an exceptional view of Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre.
Step 5
In the center of the esplanade, stands the monument erected in 2013, which evokes both the expansion of the congregation of the brothers of Saint-Gabriel in 32 countries, and their mission, summarized in the three words engraved on the base of the fountain: teach, educate, evangelize.
