Protestantism is present in France from the beginning of the XNUMXth century.

In Vendée, in the heart of the Vendée bocage, visit the Museum of Protestant France in Monsireigne. Then, as you walk, pass in front of the temples of Mouchamps, Saint-Prouant and Saint-Germain-de-Prinçay.

The museum

Opened in 1947 in an XNUMXth century dwelling and transformed into a castle in the XNUMXth century, the Musée de la France protestante presents a collection of manuscripts, paintings and objects linked to the Reformation.

Temples

Although Catholicism is still widely practiced in the Vendée Valley, some villages such as Mouchamps or Saint-Prouant keep a Protestant community, which meets in the temples. The architecture is diverse: recent buildings such as in Mouchamps (1883) or an old Catholic church from the XNUMXth century in Saint Prouant which was bequeathed to the Protestants by Napoleon.

A little history…

Protestantism appeared in the Vendée bocage from the beginning of the 1629th century through Bas-Poitou. In XNUMX, Protestantism was in decline, but remained around Mouchamps, Saint-Prouant, Monsireigne and Pouzauges.

Henri IV dismissed at Mouchamps

Passing through the Château du Parc Soubise in Mouchamps, at Catherine de Parthenay's, Henri IV was turned away by one of his daughters, from whom he would have asked for access to his room. “By the chapel, Sire!” would have replied the young chatelaine.
