Description

During the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar, it would be a Roman legion called "the Alouette" which would have discovered the strategic interest of this 233-meter hill overlooking Les Herbiers and would have given it its name of Mont des Alouettes.
In the Middle Ages, the religious, intellectual and agricultural activity of the abbey of La Grainetière, in Ardelay, transformed the whole region.
During the Hundred Years War, the city was not spared; the English invade it; they are driven out later by Du Guesclin who makes war in Poitou. Likewise, the Wars of Religion cause innumerable ruins. But it was above all the French Revolution that destroyed the country. On the night of February 1 to 2, 1794, 60 people were massacred and the city was burned down. All the houses in Les Herbiers have burned down, except one.
At the end of the XNUMXth century, in a department mainly devoted to agriculture, the town already had emerging industries, in particular the manufacture of shoes.

Since the consolidation of Les Herbiers, Petit-Bourg and Ardelay in 1964, the town has benefited from constant development. The large agricultural and rural town became a small town thanks to the exceptional development of trade, industry and tourism, thus becoming the capital of Haut Bocage Vendée.
